5 out of 5 stars Very impressed and don't believe everything you read!   November 23, 2008

I've had the 740 for a week and have been really impressed. It does everything you would expect plus a little more. One reviewer on here has a few fundamental facts wrong, so I thought I'd correct them. The 740 connected seamlessly with my mac (I can even connect my iPhone 3G via bluetooth which surprised me!) also the LIVE services are not £7.99 each but a flat fee for all the services "...users can register for a monthly, flat-fee subscription of £7.99 with no hidden costs, so they can continue to receive all LIVE Services directly to their device". I used the cheapest petrol facility yesterday and via a very minor detour (1-2 mins) I found petrol that was 5p per litre cheaper saving me £2.50 on a fill up! The voice activated search works really well and means you can concentrate on the road. I've already used the Google search facility a few times and it came up with the goods (including giving details of the search and a phone number). The HD traffic works although not entirely accurate (having said that it has already saved me time). Overall Superb and would highly recommend.

We decided to upgrade from our old TomTom One of 5yrs beacuse we were tired of it routing us along roads with heavy traffic. The Live traffic looked to be the best avoidance sys on the market currently so after checking out a friends Garmin I took the plunge. I needed the Euro maps for the odd trip I do there. After 2.5months of use I can say the IQ routes in tandem with the Live traffic work well in the UK. I will shortly come to the end of my 3mnth trial of the Live traffic which means I will pay £8/mnth which I am not sure is worth it. A friend has a Tomtom 730 with traffic receiver aerial. The traffic service is free but he seems to get similar live data to me and is not limited by reception on the Vodaphone network (this is how the 740 gets its info). The unit is well designed and made. If you have had a tomtom before you will be able to use this straight away, and if you are new to it, it is very simple with a very intuitive and easy to use series of icon menus. The windscreen mount is the best I have ever seen for any car gps nav system. The Tomtom home software that updates the device with the latest maps/updates/camera positions etc.... is very easy to use and works well. In principle the idea of users having the ability to flag errors in a map and send them off to Tomtom to clarify is a great idea and will, over time, lead to more accurate and up to date maps. As a package we can thoroughly recommend this unit!!

Just don't leave this baby stuck to your windscreen when you leave your car - it will be stolen.......

5 out of 5 stars Tom Tom Go 740 Live Review.   January 22, 2009

I already owned a TomTom Go 510 for 4 years and due to charging problems (which was particular of this model) I decided it was time to purchase a newer model. Having reviewed several models over a couple of weeks I finally decided to take the plunge and ordered the Go 740 live. I was immediately impressed with the sleek slimline design and as is typical with Tomtom the ease of use. I had read other reviews concerning the windscreen mounts inability to adhere to the windscreen but i must say mine is stuck fast to its position and not moved for several weeks so I can only concur that other users must not have prepared the area sufficiently. The actual operation of the unit is exceptional and as i travel some 120 miles to work each day the IQ route works perfectly and has taken me several different ways to and from work without delay. The hd traffic has also been spot on and after the free three months trial is up I will be subscribing to this.
Overall a cracking product.

5 out of 5 stars Does everything I need from a car satnav   April 29, 2009

At first site this is a standard TomTom satnav that any existing TomTom user would recognise. However it has features that make it excellent value for money over the TomTom One, which really isn't all that much cheaper.
Key features are:
HD Traffic - works very well - but don't subscribe before your free subscription finishes - it confuses TomTom somehow.
Ability to manage your own POI file - this sounds trivial but is so much better than just keeping favourites - which never seem to get backed up and were always lost on my ONE when I processed a Map update.
Google - Brilliant - search for anything but "my mum's house" and it will you allow to set a destination in 30 seconds
Fuel Prices - a gimmick - 5 days out of date and gives unrealistic prices.
Weather - it works.
Traffic Cams - these work too - quite well - and are bundled into the HD traffic subscription. But you can also download POI files from other sites and give yourself a second warning. And you can add a voice proximity warning to a POI just by typing in the text you want read out - e.g. "GATSO camera ahead"
Also the mount is the best yet from TomTom, although the downside is that you cannot charge the unit from a standard USB lead - you need the supplied cradle or a proprietary lead.
There are other features - like the micro SD card slot, bluetooth connection, lane indication at motorway junctions, media player etc. but these seem to be of marginal benefit.
I really like this unit and recommend it - it does what a good satnav should and gets you to where you need to go as quickly as possible.

5 out of 5 stars very very good   January 17, 2009

i am a chauffer and drive 2000 miles a week, i had a tomtom go 500 before i bought this which was good and had for 5 years but was time for an upgrade. alot more features on this tomtom 740 which was good. first of all the mount, this is rock solid and has not fallen off once since i bought it. (4 weeks ago)lane guidence is good, iq routes good. but the hd traffic is outstanding ! its a million times better than the other tomtom traffic. yeas after 3 months you can choose to pay the 7.99 a month but i will def be doing that. thought it might be a bit out of date but it is great. a few times it might say 4 min delay in 2.1 miles and traffic is running well then at that time it slows down and then 4 min delay ! you can divert to another route if you want but have been trying it out to see how good it is. it works very well. saved me 3 points as well, m40 over 90 mph warned me mobile camera over bridge slowed down there it was. some reviews i read about the 740 were ok saying some things were a bit glithy but i have had no problems. this the real deal, if you drive alot this is for you.
