5 out of 5 stars Don't forget to budget for maps   April 30, 2008

This device is just about as advanced as cycling computers can be. It will track your position and movements, record your heart rate and cadence (the speed you turn the pedals) and it will aslo give you turn by turn directions. However, the supplied map is only a 'base map', it does not have intricate detail at street level. It is very important that you budget for mapping such as Garmin's own 'City Navigator 2008'. The City Navigator software has street level and even postcode details which will enable you to either plan routes on your computer using Mapsource (free from Garmin) or to plan routes on the device itself just as you would with a conventional in-car Sat Nav.
I have a Garmin 305, too, but this 705 unit really does raise the game. I have all my favourite cafés and stops stored in the 'favourites' section, so if I'm ever out and need a detour, I simply plot a route to either a point of interest (POI) (again, there is a huge point of interest built into City Navigator) or navigate to one of my favourites.
There is also a topographical map available (with contours), but it isn't in the same league as those available from Memory Map and Anquet.
My advice is to buy City Navigator 2008.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sat nav cycle computer   July 1, 2008

Top of the tree cycle computer and as long as you are using City Navigator maps a brilliant bike specific sat nav. You can also upload your own routes if you prefer. The info for the serious racing cyclist is incredible.
Not cheap and the instructions are woeful for such a complex bit of kit - I think this is why there are a few negative reviews, Garmin just have not explained it very well.

I purchased the unit with the road specific kit which included Maps. The battery life for long events is also very good.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cycling MUST HAVE   November 4, 2008

Ever fancy just taking the road on your bike and not getting lost? The Edge 705 is brilliant. You can use it for walking, cycling, running or even in the car. I have the Edge 705 HR with the Cadence sensor and Heart rate monitor and the amount of info you get after your work-out is fabulous. You can even check your ride on google earth after downloading the data to the Garmin Training Centre and to the web based Motion based home. Even see what your heart rate was at a specific time or place in your ride.
I would definitely buy this product again.

5 out of 5 stars I really love this gadget!   August 11, 2010

The 705 arrived on Tuesday (yesterday 10/8/2010) and I couldnt wait to get it on the bike and have a ride out. I watched the instructional videos on the Garmin website and I was away!

First ride was just around the block (it was getting dark by now) so today 11/8/2010 I went to work and back on the bike, a distance of 9.6 miles, which I'd always over estimated by a couple of miles. Full panniers and a 14mph headwind reduced my speed and I did the journey in 50mins (not olympic standard)

Anyway, on the way home I did it in 37 minutes. Couldnt wait to plug in the 705 and connect with the Garmin Connect website, where you get a full break down of your journey, including speed, elevation, heart rate etc on various overlays. Average speed 11.4 going to work and 15.5 coming home! I love this kit to bits. I read all the reviews but I'm more than happy with the product. I downloaded the maps directly to the device from the Garmin website cos I'm impatient and wanted them starightaway.

You can view your ride in Google earth too. I gave 5 stars because I love this product! In conjunction with the Garmin website, it will help me to improve my fitness level. Cant wait to try the virtual partner and download the wealth of local rides in the GPX format.

My husband, the gadget man, just loved this and he says it is brilliant for planning his long distance cycling routes. No,it doesn't have the maps and you have to buy this as extra but nevertheless - he was a very happy bunny on his birthday!
