I initially came across this product, or more specifically its touchscreen bigger brother, the UM-740, in a lecturer's office at my University. The only difference between this, the UM-710 and the UM-740 is the UM-740's touchscreen, webcam and microphone for us Skype users.

Both of us being a bit of tech geek, I enquired about it and he gave me a demonstration. He let me try it out myself, and I was instantly sold.

This effectively gives your PC or Mac two monitors/displays. Installation on a PC running Windows is as simple as a typical software install from a provided CD, where as a Mac installation requires you simply to download the drivers from the Mimo website prior to connecting the device via its supplied USB cable, much like you would find on a SatNav or Digital Camera; so if one were to lose said cable, it can easily be replaced.
You only need one cable, and it runs on USB 2.0 which is pretty much a standard connection on PCs these days.

The device has three buttons down the right side, an on/off button, a button to increase the brightness and one to decrease it.

The screen comes with a stand that is connected to the back of the screen with ease, and the grips found at the base of the stand prevent sliding unless you push quite hard. The whole device felt extremely sturdy when on its stand, no rattling or movement that would indicate it would fall off at any point.

Like I said, it effectively adds another screen to your PC or Mac. But here is the real geeky part; the way it does it is very...the kind of thing you see in those futuristic films where they drag something from one screen across to another somewhere else in the room.
Thats exactly how this works, click and drag across your main screen and it appears on the other. And the Mimo's screen looks just like XP on the main display, but its obviously smaller, but not compacted, due to the screen being only 7'' and having a resolution of 860x480 or so.

Its amazing to have what I consider day-to-day applications (iTunes, Googlemail or any email software/client, MSN, News reels etc) running on a small screen next to my main one, reducing that one thing we've all experienced on a PC or Mac; too many little windows open and we lose track of application locations on the screen or start bar at the bottom of the screen.

You also dont have to worry about it affecting your PC or Mac's performance. It is a USB device afterall. This is because it has its own graphics card onboard, so it never draws power from your main PC or Mac's CPU, GPU or RAM to keep itself running.

If im going to nitpick, id say that there was ever so slight lag (slowdown) of the mouse cursor as it transfers onto the Mimo screen and moves around, but that really is a VERY minor complaint, as the device runs pretty much exactly as Windows does, its just a smaller screen.

Thats all you can say about it really. Its a small, extremely versatile monitor for those of us that like to keep our desktops tidy, and always wanted to keep an eye on your emails and alike when working on a piece of software (such as games) that takes you away from the desktop.

For those of us who are gamers; you can run any form of software such as Rivatuner, nVidia Control Panel, any piece of software that gives a display of your CPU, RAM and GPU power consumption, temperature etc on the Mimo whilst running your games on your main screen. It is exactly like running these on the desktop background, except you can now see that background desktop whislt running games and it doesnt reduce your power output, so you wont experience any FPS drops as a result.

5 star product. Its incredibly useful. You can use pretty much ANY software program on it that you choose. Saves space. Looks great. Appeals to the geek in you...well, it does for me anyway.

It's one of those gadgets that you either have a use for or you think it's utterly pointless. I have a graphics card that supports one monitor. Having a second USB powered (one cable) monitor ideally sized for messenger / Twitter windows and common shortcuts is really handy. Even if you have two monitors this makes an ideal third. If you're on a long train journey and you need to use your laptop to get some work done but your kid keeps bothering you then plug in the USB monitor and some earphones and let him or her watch a film while you work and all off the one laptop or netbook.

I'm not here to sell this thing. You either want one or you don't. If you want one then you won't be dissapointed.

My partner gave me one of these for Christmas...and it was Dead on Arrival. So I returned it and got a replacement... which lasted for three weeks, then the screen corrupted and it gave up the ghost too. So I got another replacement, which arrived today. And it ran for two hours and then failed in the same way as the second.

Perhaps Amazon have a dud batch, but I'm giving up on this model at least: It's just not worth the hassle any more. Pity, because I really liked it, when it worked...
