As DVD playback made the PlayStation 2 more than just a game machine, hefty multi-media features make the PlayStation 3 Slim an even more versatile home entertainment machine. 32% smaller, 36% lighter and consuming 34% less power than the originals, this latest edition of the PlayStation 3 has been completely redesigned for a much more streamlined feel. Features such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video will likely make it the central component of your media set-up. Still, it is first and foremost a powerful gaming console.

Under the Hood
The PS3 features IBM's "Cell" processor and a co-developed Nvidia graphics processor that makes the system able to perform two trillion calculations per second. That makes the PlayStation 3 40 times faster than the PS2. Along with the traditional AV and composite connections, it also boasts an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port, which delivers uncompressed, unconverted digital picture and sound to compatible high-definition TV and projectors. The system is capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution for a full HD experience. This console also provides for a sound experience by supporting Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, as well as Linear PCM 7.1. A pre-installed 120 GB hard disc drive allows you ample room to save games as well as download content from the internet.

Blu-Ray Is the New Way
Sony's PlayStation 3 games are encoded onto the Blu-Ray disc media format, which can hold six times as much data as traditional DVDs. This increase in capacity, combined with the awesome power of its processor and graphics card, promises mind-blowing games once developers have learned how to fully harness the new console's power. The PS3 will al

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome   October 6, 2009

When I started playing video games I preferred PC games... they are easy to control with mouse and keyboard and I never felt comfortable with console gamepads... eventually I grew old, stopped playing games as they need more patience to play through and complete... then one fine day after tedious office hours I just ordered this PS3 from Amazon without thinking twice (well... without thinking anything)... Amazon delivery was fast as usual... got Resistance 2, Hawx and pacific rift... as soon as I switched in on... IT JUST BLEW MY MIND ... Blu-ray, HD output and high quality audio... I immerged into the world of game again... finished Hawx and Resistance 2 within one week... now I feel like I am young again... it's not only about games... I can stream my media contents from my PC... but the best part I liked about this (well it is true with all consoles) you switch on the TV and press the PS logo on the controller... you are ready to go... frag some aliens or shoot down your enemy in a dog fight over Rio!... its your choice... and hundreds of titles to choose from.

Highly recommended for those who want hassle free, fun fill and pure gamming pleasure and entertainment AIO...

Sony's PlayStation 3 was my first foray into the console market, after realising that my computer wasn't up to running the current games. I'd enjoyed FIFA 2002, FIFA 2004 and FIFA 07, but now the specs were beyond my poor computer.

In the end, I decided to go for a PS3 over its two rivals, the Wii and Xbox 360. In this review, I'll share my opinions on the various facets of the PS3.

Controller: Obviously, an important part of any console being the part you interact with. The DualShock 3 is comfortable, and the buttons all work well. Both sticks are responsive, and the triggers at the back are fine. Despite playing a lot of FIFA 10, I haven't experienced my fingers slipping off - unlike several reviews I had previously read.

Grahpics: The PS3's graphics are second-to-none, delivering awesome HD gaming and film on my TV. This was the main reason that I didn't buy a Wii - the graphics are just rubbish - and the PS3 has exceeded my expectations in this department.

PlayStation Network (online gaming): The PlayStation Network (PSN) works absolutely fine, and really extends the life of a game. While the general consensus is that Xbox Live is superior to the PSN, I would like to dispel the myth that the PSN is no good. On the contrary, it works very smoothly, in both games I own, FIFA 10 and LittleBigPlanet. While it may not deliver the "cutting edge" features Xbox Live does, the PSN is absolutely fine if you're not a hardcore gamer, and only want to play for a sensible amount of time (2 hours a day, or so).

Media playback: The PS3's Blu-ray capabilities were a large part of my decision to buy it. And it didn't disappoint. Blu-ray is fantastic, and it is far and away superior to DVDs on my 32-inch television. (By the way, the PS3 plays DVDs as well).

Games: A main part! We need good games to play on :) Both FIFA 10 and LittleBigPlanet are excellent. The PS3 versions of multiplatform games are supposed to be graphically inferior to their Xbox 360 counterparts, but, to be honest, unless you're minutely examining the picture while you're playing, you won't notice the difference. As for exclusive games, the PS3 offers a more diverse range than the Xbox 360. LittleBigPlanet, a game where you can make your own levels and share them online for others to play, was my second game, and it's fantastic. ModNation Racers, the second "Play, Create, Share" title, is a kart-racing Mario Kart-style game, also looks good, and I expect to buy that soon. LittleBigPlanet 2 is coming out in late 2010. Currently, neither the Wii or Xbox 360 have anything like these games, and I think this is a big win for the PS3.

So, why did I buy a PS3: and are those reasons justified now I've got one? Well, I got a PS3 over a Wii because it delivered HD graphics. As I mentioned above, the graphics are amazing, and simply blew me away for the first week or so. The Wii, in comparison, looks pathetic. I got a PS3 instead of an Xbox 360 for two reasons: the money and Blu-ray. Blu-ray, as I've said, is far superior to DVDs, whatever Xbox 360 owners say. The PS3 was also cheaper, as I saved on the £40 a year for Xbox Live - the PSN is fine for my gaming needs, and, as I mentioned above, there is no need to pay for Live unless you're planning to play for six hours a day.

Overall, the PS3 is a fantastic piece of kit. Not only is it a brilliant, brilliant powerhouse of a gaming machine, but it's a Blu-ray player as well! It's real value for money, so it's the largest 5* I've ever given on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased-good puchase for games and Blu-Ray   September 2, 2009

Being a long time PC gamer, I decided to switch over to the PS3 for my gaming needs, for various reasons. Having a friend with the original model, I have wanted to invest for a while, but the price put me off. So when the slim appeared at an affordable price point for me, I decided to grab one. These are my thoughts after a few days of using it:

The actual unit is smaller than I thought it would be, but looks much better than internet pictures make out. The finish doesn't look tacky or cheap, instead the matt finish combined with some chrome and mirror finishing gives the unit a very sophisticated look. Also, it coordinates very well with the piano black finish of my HDTV. The buttons are physical buttons, which take a very light touch to trigger and give a satisfying high-tech style tone of confirmation, without being annoying. The unit does give off some audible sound at first, but that seems to fade away within a couple of minutes. It does make a lot of audible sound when loading games from a disc, but it's only very brief to be a real annoyance.

The unit uses a wireless Bluetooth controller, which is a great advantage as there is no need to be limited by a cable. I plan on buying the Bluetooth remote (not essential-joy pad works) for operating it's Blu-Ray and DVD player, as the control pad's shoulder buttons are triggered easily when resting it on the coffee table.

The on-board menu/operating system is easy to use and guides you through the initial set up with ease. It also looks nice with animated backgrounds and wallpapers, more of which are available from the Playstation Network store (some of which are free).

It's easy to set up, although connecting it wirelessly took some time, but that was due to the configuration of my household router not the PS3 itself. One gripe I have is that the hard disk and wireless activity lights are hidden under the front shelf of the unit, and can be difficult to see when I am sitting at a distance on my couch. Again, not a major gripe, and to a lot of people not a gripe at all, but I like to know when it's actually doing something.

I have only been able to test it with one game so far, Batman Arkham Asylum, and using this on a 1080p HDTV looks fantastic! The picture is sharp, vibrant and the graphics are very detailed and all-round excellent! I have also played a couple of demos which were downloaded from the PSN Store, and again, the graphics have been excellent and the whole experience very enjoyable.

The Blu-Rayer player is great and looks fantastic if you have a HDTV o connect it too. The only downside at the moment is that Blu-Ray movies are more expensive than DVD's. The unit also handles DVD's very well, up-scalling them better than some Samsung and Toshiba up-scaling DVD players I have seen. This will give your DVD's some extra life and I have been wanting to watch some old DVD's again, simply for the new picture experience. Saying that though, I plan on buying Blu-Rays from now on, but less so than DVD's, due to the price difference. You may be able to find them at a good price on Amazon Marketplace in the future.

Some people have complained that there are not as many games on this as the 360, but you have to consider some other factors too. The playstation 3 has a long life ahead of it. At the time of writing this, there are some excellent looking titles planned for release, including, Batman Arkham Asylum, Assassins Creed 2, Dirt 2, Tekken 6, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3. Most of those are also available ion the 360, except for God of War and Uncharted 2. There are also going to be a huge amount of games, which I can't list here in entirety. The future of this console looks great, so take the complaints of impatient whingers with a few grains of salt.

There are also some great titles already, including, little big planet, Killzone2, Metal Gear Solid 4 , Street Fighter, Fallout 3, Uncharted and so on.

I look forward o playing more games in the future, using the new BBC iPlayer support, watching downloaded videos, playing music and browsing the internet from the comfort of my living room.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent bit of kit!   June 20, 2010

I was thinking of buying a games machine for some time and eventually decided on the PlayStation 3. What persuaded me in the end was the multi-functionality of the PS3. As well as game-playing, you get a Blu-ray player (and DVD, CD etc) and internet browser. This may make it easier to persuade the other half that this is an essential purchase!

So far I have been impressed. Its very easy to setup: I attached it to the TV with a HDMI cable, logged it into my wireless network, although you can attach an ethernet cable if needed and after tapping in a few details it was up and running. The device looks great and doesn't take up much room.

The PS3 comes with one wireless controller (two would have been better as they're not the cheapest things, although I guess it keeps the overall cost of the unit down) and various cables. Irritatingly, it does not come with a HDMI cable. On HDMI cables, be careful if you go to a high-street store as you could pay up to £30. I recommend looking around as you can find much much cheaper ones, with no apparent difference in quality.

Game play so far is good. The graphics are of an excellent standard, and the controller works perfectly. The Blu-ray discs I have played so far have done so with no hitches. You can get a remote control for the PS3 which would be useful when playing Blu-rays.

Using the World Wide Web is straigtforward, although entering URLs with the controller is a little cumbersome. You can buy a keypad that attaches to the controller though.

Overall a great product. If you are thinking of buying s Blu-ray player, but wondering whether to justify it, consider the PS3, as you get a great deal more!
